Relativistic plasma nanophotonics for ultrahigh energy density physics
The heating of dense matter to extreme temperatures motivates the development of powerful lasers1–4. However, the barrier the critical electron density imposes to light penetration into ionized materials results in the deposition of most of the laser energy into a thin surface layer at typically only 0.1% of solid density. Here, we demonstrate that trapping of femtosecond laser pulses of relati...
متن کاملUltrahigh energy neutrino physics
We discuss a problem concerning the ultrahigh energy neutrino propagation through the Earth. We present calculation of the neutrino-nucleon cross section at high energies, based on the unifed evolution equation at small x. We also show the solution of the transport equation for different neutrino fluxes originating from active galactic nuclei, gamma ray bursts and top-down model.
متن کاملNew physics from ultrahigh energy cosmic rays
Observations of cosmic rays with energies above ∼ 4 × 10 GeV have inspired several speculative suggestions concerning their origin. The crucial question is whether or not the spectrum exhibits the expected ‘GZK cutoff’ at this energy — concerning which there are presently contradictory results. If there is indeed a cutoff, then the sources are cosmologically distant and rather exotic in nature....
متن کاملUltrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays: Old Physics or New Physics?
We consider the advantages of and the problems associated with hypotheses to explain the origin of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECR: E > 10 EeV) and the “trans-GZK” cosmic rays (TGZK: E > 100 EeV) both through (‘old physics” (acceleration in cosmic sources) and “new physics” (new particles, topological defects, fat neutrino cross sections, Lorentz invariance violation).
متن کاملImplications of Ultrahigh Energy Air Showers for Physics and Astrophysics
The primary ultrahigh energy particles which produce giant extensive air showers in the Earth’s atmosphere present an intriguing mystery from two points of view: (1) How are these particles produced with such astounding energies, eight orders of magnitude higher than those produced by the best man-made terrestrial accelerators? (2) Since they are most likely extragalactic in origin, how do they...
